Nancy’s use of texture and transparent acrylic layers invites you into a connection with her paintings you won’t easily walk away from. Inspired by internal experience and the external world, she develops each piece using watery acrylic paint in numerous layers with a variety of techniques. The result is a delightful array of new discoveries in each piece that captivates the viewer and engages the senses. A native of North Carolina, Nancy has studied with watermedia artists Luna Lee Ray and Mary Todd Beam.
I love texture. I begin each painting by creating a chaotic under painting using either watery acrylic paint or torn collage papers. Sometimes I impose a sketch on top or I look for objects that come out of the chaos to get a sense of direction in the painting. I then begin interacting with the surface by adding multiple transparent acrylic layers to create volume, depth and space. In the end, the painting takes on a life of its own and dictates its own completion. My greatest delight is having people drawn into the painting and making new discoveries the longer they look.
